Registration
Who can become member of Central library?
Any physical person can become registered user of Central Library of Faculty of Law. Students, employees of Masaryk University, members of Community of absolvents and friends of Masaryk University and absolvents with absolvent’s card can register for free. Other users are obliged to pay registration fee CZK 200 (for library card and registration for one year).
What do I need for my registration?
For your registration you will need ISIC, ITIC, employee’s card, chip card issued by Masaryk University. External users submit valid ID or passport and pay registration fee of CZK 200. During your registration your Consent with Terms on provision of library services by Masaryk University on address: https://inet.muni.cz/app/knihovny/prihlaska or fulfil Application of user of Masaryk University’s libraries.
How and when do I have to prolong my registration?
Prolonging of registration can be done at registration and informative counter in library, via email or by contacting our library via cell phone. In case that your registration would be coming to its end your reader’s account or library staff at loan counter will inform you. Registration is set for period of one year (in case of student for one academic year).
Loans
Where and when can I borrow a book?
Books are borrowed during library’s opening hours from Monday until Friday.
Monday – Thursday 8.00am - 8.00pm
Friday 8.00am - 6.00pm
How many books can I borrow at once?
If you are Masaryk University’s student than you can borrow 30 books.
If you are external user can borrow maximally 10 books.
For how long can I borrow a book (to take home)?
Loan term for most absent loans is 30 days with possibility of prolongation unless the book has not been yet reserved by other user. Maximal term of prolonged loan is 90 days. Publications which are marked as “short-term” or in Czech “krátkodobá” can be borrowed only for 7 days. In this case prolongation is possible as well unless the book has been already reserved by another user. Maximal term of prolonged “short-term” loan is 30 days.
How can I prolong my loan?
Sign in to Union catalogue ( https://katalog.muni.cz/ ) and in its upper part click on “My account” and in chart choose number of your “Loans”. Then list of your loans appears and you click on underlined number that is next to name of author of selected publication. Then you click on “Renew” and your loan is prolonged (if you did not exceed maximal loan term). You can also prolong all your loans by clicking on “Renew all” at top panel.
My loan cannot be prolonged? Why is that?
Your loan cannot be prolonged if your publication is reserved by another user, if you have already exceeded maximal loan term or if you have reached maximal loan term. Another reason may be that your registration is invalid. In this case we recommend contacting our library.
How do I recognize publication that cannot be borrowed home?
In catalogue such publications are marked in column “Item status” either “In house loan”, “In house loan CLOSED STACKS” or “Pres. (Deposit 3)”. These publications are in study rooms No. 1 and 2 and are marked by red or blue signature. In house status has also journals, magazines, thesis and so call “old fund” (literature published until 1950).
Can I borrow “in house” publication for night or weekend?
You can borrow second and other in house exemplar of each publication from study room No. 1. These are borrowed only to intern users as early as one hour before library’s closing time.
Is it possible to borrow publication which is in “Deposit”?
You can borrow publications that has status of “Month Closed Stacks”. These can be reserved after singing in to Union catalogue of Masaryk University and clicking on “Request” in list of holdings.
What are penalties for late return of publication?
It is CZK 10 per day for week loan (which is marked as “krátkodobá” i. e. “short-term”), CZK 5 per day for month loan or CZK 10 per hour for in house loan."
Reservation
How can I reserve publication?
First, you must sign in to Union catalogue of Masaryk University. Then, you search for requested title and click on Faculty of Laws. After displaying of holdings, you click on “Request” which is in left side of chart. Do not forget to fill in date until which you are interested in chosen publication and to confirm your reservation. You can reserve only those publication that are already borrowed or located in deposit.
How do I recognize, that reserved publication is ready and where to find it?
When reserved publication is returned by previous user and reservation is processed, an informative e-mail is send to you. This e-mail contains information about date up to which you can pick up reserved publication in library. Information about state of your reservations can be found in “My account” in column “Hold Requests”. Prepared publications are ordered alphabetically according to surnames of its authors and you can find them next to loan counter. At loan counter you must present prepared publication for purposes of registration of your loan.
Can I cancel my reservation if I no longer need it?
Yes, log in to the Collections Catalogue, click on "Reader Account" in the menu, then on "Borrowing Requests". When the list of requests appears, click on the underlined number of the request you wish to cancel and delete the reservation.
If the book is already ready for collection, reply to the email informing you that you are not interested in the publication.
My account
How do I enter my readers account (“My account”)?
Each registered user of library has online access to his readers account after signing in to Union catalogue of Masaryk University. Students and employees of Masaryk University enter their UČO and primary password for access to IS. External users use their login (instead of UČO) and password that they have obtained in library during registration.
What can I find in My account?
There is a list of loans with loan terms, loan history list, hold requests list and hold request history list, including list of unpaid penalties for late returns and other payments. There are also your addresses and validity of your registration.

Library fund
How is the library fund sorted?
In part of library which can accessed freely the books are sorted as “in house”, intended for study purposes in library and as “absent” which you can borrow home. In house publications are stocked in study rooms, absent publications are stocked in so called “free access” (in Czech “volný výběr”) No. 1, 2 and 3. Information about location of specific publication can be found in Union catalogue of Masaryk University in column “Sublibrary”. Further, the publications are sorted according to signature and into groups by disciplines. (plan) Rest of the fund is located in closed deposits and these publications must be requested via Union catalogue of Masaryk University (after signing in).
What is a signature?
A signature is a marking on the spine of a book that consists of a letter/letters and a number. The letters indicate the field in which the publication has been classified (e.g. Tr= criminal law) and the number is the serial number of the book in that field.
Where can I find journals?
You can find journals in the left-hand section of the library (see map), listed alphabetically by title. There is always the latest (outgoing) year of the title, and for some selected journals, older years.

What are electronic information resources?
Electronic informative resources of Masaryk University are mainly licensed specialized databases that are accessible mainly for students and employees from Masaryk University’s network. Central Library of Masaryk University’s Faculty of Law enables to its registered users – according to license terms – access to selected disciplines focused electronic information resources.
